KEY POINTS

  • "Outlaws" adds space pirates and revamped combat to "No Man's Sky"
  • Players can engage in illegal in-game activities like smuggling and raiding
  • Pirates may now attack planetary settlements and cargo freighters

The next major update for Hello Games’ “No Man’s Sky” will add a few of the community’s most-requested features to the game.

Players can now dive deeper into the seedy underbelly of the galaxy’s criminal organization in the “Outlaws” expansion, which introduces a slew of combat-oriented updates and tons of new features that will allow players to live their space pirate fantasies in “No Man’s Sky.”

Perhaps the biggest component of the update is the addition of outlaw systems, which are mostly ruled by criminal syndicates. From here, players can take on procedurally generated missions meant for pirates.

Trader ships and freighters are now much more profitable, which should incentivize players who are up to no good. Contraband goods can also be smuggled off in regulated systems for much higher prices than usual.

However, other pirates might target the players themselves, striking at their settlements in planetary pirate raids or hitting up their cargo ships in space.

The second biggest component of “Outlaws” is the revamped space combat. Apart from new visual effects, there are a few new combat features that should make each dogfight more fun and interesting.

Players will now be able to hire wingmen to support them in combat. Roaming pilots can be recruited into the player’s squadron, and they can be summoned at any time to help out. They will automatically leave once the combat is over.

Wingmen can be customized and upgraded for maximum style and combat efficiency.

The other major combat feature is the introduction of the new Starship Combat Auto-Follow option for fighting in space. When this is enabled, the player’s ship will automatically aim at hostiles, allowing for smoother movements in dogfights.

Players will still be able to make some fine adjustments to their aim should they feel the need to do so. The option can be activated either as a button hold or toggle input.

There are plenty more features to be discovered in the new expansion, from the new Solar Sail ships to improved cargo freighters and expanded starship caps for even bigger custom fleets.

The “Outlaws” update is now available for all platforms.
