Michael Slager, the North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer who fatally shot 50-year-old black motorist Walter Scott on Saturday, has been removed from his position on the police force effective immediately, city Mayor Keith Summey said at a news conference Wednesday. North Charleston will continue to cover medical expenses for Slager's wife, who is eight months pregnant.

North Charleston has also purchased body cameras for all of its police officers, Summey said. Slager was charged with murder Tuesday after a video of the fatal shooting showed that Slager shot Scott in the back as he fled after a routine traffic stop.
