KEY POINTS

  • A couple of official Nintendo documents seemingly hint of a new "Mario Sports" game
  • Nintendo announced earlier today that it is holding a Direct Mini event on July 20
  • Nintendo is poised to commemorate the 35th anniversary of "Super Mario" in September 2020

A brand new “Mario” sports game could arrive soon on Nintendo’s hybrid gaming console Switch, according to a new report. It has been three years since the Japanese gaming giant released a “Mario” sports title. The latest report cites the recently discovered trademark filed by Nintendo.

New “Mario Sports” Game Coming Soon?

Nintendo has registered a new “Mario Sports” trademark in Australia and Europe. The two listings were filed on May 14, 2020 and expire in May 2030, ten years later. Interestingly, both registrations refer to “Mario Sports.”

According to the trademark, “Mario Sports” applies to electronic game programs, video game programs, downloadable electronic game programs, video game cartridges, memory cards for video game machines, smartphone cases, smartphone covers, computer game software, computer programs, electronic publications and downloadable image files, among others.

“Mario Sports” series has introduced “Mario Sports Mix” playable on Wii and “Mario Sports Superstar” playable on Nintendo 3DS. The latest trademark filing does not confirm that there is a new “Mario Sports” title or an upcoming entry is underway. It is possible that Nintendo filed a trademark to protect its IP or possibly in preparation for a new game.

“Super Mario” 35th Anniversary

Several fans recently discovered a Twitter account that allegedly belongs to “Super Mario” 35th anniversary in other Nintendo news. The rumored account has a Twitter handle ‘aaaaaaaaaaa’ and could be a placeholder for the possible promotion in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the iconic plumber. Interestingly, the Twitter account has the same recovery email with Super Smash Bros and Splatoon, fanning flames of speculations that it is indeed an official Nintendo account.

VGC earlier reported that Nintendo is planning to announce several major releases for the 35th anniversary of “Super Mario.” The recently discovered account could be the platform where Nintendo would announce and update the popular franchise. The Japanese gaming giant is scheduled to hold a Nintendo Direct Mini on Monday.

While fans are not expecting that the company announce a new “Super Mario” game related to its 35th anniversary, it would be a huge surprise. The Nintendo event started at 7 AM PT on July 20, 2020.
