Outlander 2017 spoilers
“Outlander” Season 3 will not bring Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) back together right away. Starz

Droughtlander seems to be never-ending. “Outlander” has been on hiatus since July, but fans can look forward to new episodes of the time travel drama in 2017. The actors and writers of the Starz program haven’t left fans without anything to hold them over, though. They’ve let some fun spoilers slip, so we already know plenty about Season 3.

A New Opening Scene — Unlike the third boos, the Season 3 will kick off at the Battle of Culloden. Jamie (Sam Heughan) will face off with Black Jack (Tobias Menzies) on the battlefield. Showrunner Ronald D. Moore said that showing the action made more sense for the TV show.

Flashbacks — Though the show zoomed forward 20 years in the Season 2 finale, fans will still get to see what they missed in the last couple decades. Expect to see what Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie were up to during their time apart.

Separation — Claire won’t get back to the 18th century right away. Balfe has noted that she and Heughan were often filming separately, which is a big change. “It’s very strange, but the nice thing is I have been able to work with Tobias,” Balfe told Vanity Fair in November. “I feel quite lucky. If I don’t have one husband, I’ve always got the backup. Not that either of them are backups, but it’s been an interesting and strange dynamic.”

More Frank — That means Frank will be appearing more than readers might expect. Author Diana Gabaldon said that Season 3 dives deeper into Claire and Frank’s relationship than her novel “Voyager.” However, she told TV Guide that it was done “consistently.” Claire and Frank are trying to make their marriage work, but it will be a struggle.

Print Shop — Readers love Jamie and Claire’s reunion scene in the books, and it sounds like the TV adaptation will keep the beloved sequence. Sam Heughan tweeted about filming in the print shop in December.

Jamaica — Heughan confirmed that the show would head to warmer climates this year. While the story will take place in Jamaica, “Outlander” will follow the lead of “Black Sails” and use South Africa as a stand in for the Caribbean.

New Characters — Lord John Grey (David Berry), a prison governor who likes Jamie a little too much, is one of the many characters fans are very excited to meet in 2017. Ian Murray (John Bell), Jamie’s nephew, and Marsali (Lauren Lyle), Laoghaire’s (Nell Hudson) daughter, will be introduced as well. Joe Abernathy (Wil Johnson), a classmate of Claire’s, will join the show too. Gabaldon also confirmed that Mr. Willoughby, a Chinese exile who helps Jamie during his trip to Jamaica, will appear, but an actor hasn’t been announced in the role.

New Fergus — Though Fergus isn’t a new character, he will have a new face. César Domboy, 26, will play an older version of the French boy, previously played by 15-year-old Romann Berrux.

One thing that we don’t know, however, is when “Outlander” Season 3 will premiere. Starz has yet to announce a premiere date.
