In a shocking incident, a woman has accused her husband of injecting their newborn with poison, leading to the child's death.

Cops launched an investigation into the incident that occurred in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Officers said they have detained Arun Chaudhary on the complaint of his wife, Seeta, for further investigation, as per India Today.

The mother was admitted to a private nursing home on the night of April 3, where she gave birth to a girl. Doctors gave the child's father a list of medicines to be bought from the hospital pharmacy. Arun, however, insisted on buying them from a different pharmacy and left the hospital.

The man, who is a pathologist by profession, returned a while later and administered the injection to the baby himself, against the advice of hospital staff and his wife. Soon after, the child began showing signs of distress.

On seeing the baby's condition deteriorating, the hospital referred her to another medical facility. However, the newborn tragically died on the way to the hospital.

In her complaint, Seeta alleged that her husband intentionally poisoned the newborn as he did not want a child, adding that Arun had forced her to terminate pregnancies twice before as he did not want to be a father. She added there were earlier attempts to poison too, and Arun had been helped by his family, including his brother, in committing the crime.

Police have registered a case for murder, and an investigation is on.

A similar incident was reported in Pakistan wherein a man was arrested after he allegedly shot his newborn daughter five times. Reports said the man, identified as Shahzeb Khan, shot his newborn Jannat Fatima because did not want a daughter. According to his wife, Khan was enraged when she gave birth to a girl and left the house for a few days, only to return and murder his daughter. The family also reported Khan threatening them with a revolver before ordering his wife to hand him the baby. He was arrested following a days-long manhunt.
