Photos of Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop have leaked online just before the company’s special press event in New York City. The images show the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop running Windows 10 S, a lightweight version of Microsoft 10 that will compete with Google’s Chrome OS.

The photos of the new “Surface Laptop” was shared on Twitter by WalkingCat (@h0x0d). The images appear to be leaked press renders showing off the new computer in platinum, burgundy, cobalt blue and graphite gold color options.

The Surface Laptop also features Microsoft’s signature Alcantara-covered keyboard. This type of keyboard material has been used on the Microsoft Surface Pro 4’s Type Cover, but this would be the first time that it will be available on a single piece of hardware.

WalkingCat also shared a 360-degree view of the new Surface Laptop revealing its very few ports. It appears as though the device will have a single USB port, a DisplayPort, a headphone jack and a Surface Dock connector, as pointed out by Engadget. There appears to be no sign of Microsoft adopting USB Type-C for these new machines.

WalkingCat said that the Surface Laptop will feature PixelSense displays. This means that the 13.5-inch display will be capable of multitouch input. What’s not yet confirmed is the display’s screen resolution. However, it’s being speculated to be a full HD 1080p panel since WalkingCat stated the display features 3.4 million pixels. It also looks like the Surface Laptop’s display features a square-like 3:2 aspect ratio, as pointed out by The Verge. This is the same aspect ratio found on Microsoft’s Surface Book.

As for internals, there’s no information on what processor this new Surface Laptop is using. It is said to only weigh 2.76 pounds and to measure only 10mm at its thinnest point.

Overall, the new Surface Laptop looks a lot like a thinner Surface Book. The main difference here is that the display isn’t detachable, and it’s very much like any traditional “clamshell” design notebook. One could argue that the device is like a combination of the Surface Book and the Surface Pro, especially with the inclusion of the Alcantara-covered keyboard, which is usually found on the Surface Pro Type Covers.

The most interesting thing about the leaked images is that they give everyone a glimpse of the new operating system, Windows 10 S. The Cloud-based OS is a limited version of the full Windows 10 experience. Previous rumors suggested that Windows 10 S will only be able to run apps that are downloaded from the Microsoft Store, and users will be able to upgrade their Surface Laptops to the full version of Windows 10 for a discounted price.

Windows 10 S is believed to be designed for the education market which is currently being dominated by Google’s low-cost Chrome OS-powered Chromebooks. This is also why it’s expected that the new Surface laptop will come with similar price points and features, as pointed out by PC World.

Microsoft will be holding its special press event today in New York City at 9:30 a.m. ET/ 6:30 a.m. PT. Microsoft is expected to focus on the education market and isn’t likely to announce the Surface pro 5, the Surface Book 2 or the much-rumored Surface Phone at the event.
