KEY POINTS

  • There was a "temporary" issue with the company's packaging process
  • The pies were distributed to stores in nine states including Washington and Arizona
  • Customers who have the pies may return them for a refund

A company is recalling certain pies because they may contain an undeclared allergen. The products were distributed in various states.

The affected Red Button Vintage Creamery French Silk Pies may have undeclared almonds, which is an allergen (tree nuts), according to the announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. The problem was reportedly discovered by a retail location's staff who noticed that while the cases marked as "Turtle Cream Pies" indeed contained said pies, they had sleeves on with the label saying "French Silk Pie."

"Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's pre-operational changeover packaging process," the announcement noted.

The Turtle Cream Pie contains almonds, the announcement explained. However, the French Silk Pie labeling does not declare this, so anyone with sensitivity or allergy to the tree nut who ends up consuming the recalled pie may experience a "serious or life-threatening allergic reaction."

Tree nuts are among the eight most common food allergens, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). They include cashews, almonds, pecans, Brazil nuts, walnuts and pistachios.

"Reactions to tree nuts can be severe, including life-threatening anaphylaxis, and individuals with a tree nut allergy should have epinephrine available at all times," the organization stressed.

It's also best to have the epinephrine auto-injector in a place where it can be easily accessed. As The Nemours Foundation noted, "every second counts in an allergic reaction."

In the case of the current recall, no illnesses related to the issue have so far been reported.

The recalled Red Button Vintage Creamery French Silk Pies have the UPC code 0 41172 81290 9 and Lot Codes that begin with 2 266. Their packaging consisted of a clear plastic dome with a black base and had a cardboard sleeve with the product name on it.

The recalled pies were sold at retail stores in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Those who find that they are in possession of a recalled pie may take it back to the store where they bought it to get a full refund.

Those who have questions about the recall may also contact the company at 801-233-6660.
