A woman suffered serious injuries after she was attacked by a pit bull in Ceredo, a town in Wayne County, West Virginia. The incident reportedly took place on C Street on Sunday afternoon.

Officials with Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Control said the woman was in her backyard when the dog jumped a fence and attacked her. The woman suffered several injuries in the unprovoked attack. Officials said the woman had cuts on her cheek, nose, arms, and back of her head. The woman's earlobe was bitten off in the attack.

According to local reports, the incident took place in an area where owning pit bulls was illegal. Officials said the dog was vaccinated and was not euthanized.

Other details about the case remain unknown. The condition of the victim was also not clearly known as of Monday night.

It remains unclear if the owner of the dog was taken into custody or was questioned.

Pit bulls are a ferocious breed of dogs and have been often associated with unprovoked attacks. Last month, a woman and her pet dog were attacked by three pit bulls in Marlborough, Massachusetts. According to a local report, the pit bulls broke through an open window at a home and attacked the woman and her dog, a German shepherd.

“She got attacked from three pit bulls,” neighbor Allan White said at the time. “She really took a beating from that animal.” White added that another neighbor stepped in to stop the attack.
