  • Aubameyang scored a penalty Sunday in Arsenal's 1-0 win over Manchester United
  • It was his first league goal in as many as six matches
  • With the win, Arsenal climbed to ninth place in the table

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended his goal drought with a record strike in Arsenal's 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Arsenal forward scored on a penalty kick after Paul Pogba fouled right-back Hector Bellerin in the box.

On Sunday, Pogba registered an unwanted record. The 27-year-old Frenchman has now conceded three penalties in the Premier League under the reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while no other Manchester United player has conceded more than one, according to ESPN.

The same report also revealed that Aubameyang became the first-ever Arsenal player to score a penalty at Old Trafford in the Premier League as neither of the previous two attempts were successful – Robin Van Persie in 2011 and Gilberto Silva in 2006 (though Arsenal did win that last one). It was a self-boost for Aubameyang, who had gone without scoring in his previous five appearances in the Premier League.

After Arsenal failed to score in their past two Premier League defeats to Manchester City and Leicester City, boss Mikel Arteta was relieved to see Aubameyang get to the back of the net at a crucial moment that also marked the Gunners' first win in 14 years in the home ground of Man Utd.

"I'm glad it's finished. Every striker needs goals and in these moments we have to create more for Auba. He has scored the crucial goal and it is going to lift his confidence. I wanted to keep it quiet from the players. I wanted to generate belief and I asked them to be who we are as a team right now. I'm delighted because we played with a lot of courage and big personality," Arteta said on BBC's "Match of the Day".

"Individually you have to win the fights and step up to the occasion and the performance of every player today was top drawer," said Arteta, adding that Arsenal could have scored twice in the first half.

"They played a really tricky formation with four midfielders and two that constantly strain your back four. We could have scored twice in the first half and when we scored the goal we had to manage those moments. There was high stress, it is different to any other ground," added Arteta in the same BBC interview.
