KEY POINTS

  • The Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Dallas Mavericks to currently sit at the eighth seed in the Western Conference
  • Damian Lillard erupted for 61 big points in Portland’s 134-131 win
  • Lillard joins Wilt Chamberlain as the only player in NBA history to score in three 60-point games in a single season

The high-intensity pace of the NBA bubble has been highlighted by the way the Portland Trail Blazers have rallied in their games, spearheaded by Damian Lillard. The All-Star joined Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in league history to notch at least three separate 60-point games in a season.

In a tight race for the final postseason berth for the Western Conference, Trail Blazers have doubled their energy throughout the modified season. It’s important to note that Lillard is coming off a 51-point performance against the 76ers. This dominant stretch brings his stats up to 37 points a game inside the NBA bubble.

In Portland’s recent 134-131 win against the Dallas Mavericks, Lillard once again erupted offensively by putting up 61 big points to topple Luka Doncic’s squad. To emphasize Lillard’s dominance, he was able to hit nine out of 17 attempts from beyond the arc and notched a perfect 18 out of 18 from the free-throw line. This marked his third 60-point game of the year and joins none other than Chamberlain himself as the only player in history to accomplish such a feat.

Earlier in November, Lillard notched his then career-high against the Brooklyn Nets for 60 points with seven three-pointers made. This unfortunately was an effort that concluded with a 115-119 loss.

Then last January, Lillard scorched the Golden State Warriors with 61 as he propelled the Blazers to a tough 129-124 overtime victory.

The most recent offensive exhibition and the legendary stat line honored the 30-year-old superstar.

“I’m also happy that two out of the three came out of a winning effort,” Lillard said after the game.

The Trail Blazers are currently at the eighth seed of the Western Conference and are looking to maintain their momentum for the coming games.

“It’s a pleasure and an honor, to be in company with Wilt,” Lillard added.

With Portland at 34-39 in the team standings, they are now ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies who are at 33-39. The play-in tournament is set for August 15 where the eighth seed needs only one win to advance to the playoffs. If the eighth seed loses, then the ninth seed forces a deciding match to be played on August 16.
