KEY POINTS

  • Martial emulated Ronaldo in Man Utd's 2-0 win Sunday
  • The Frenchman has scored a total of 16 goals this season
  • Man Utd are currently placed fifth in the Premier League table

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial matched a Cristiano Ronaldo feat in his side’s 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

Martial became the first Red Devils player to score in both Manchester derbies in the same Premier League season since Ronaldo did it in the 2006-07 campaign.

The ongoing 2019-20 season’s first Manchester derby was played in December at Etihad, which the away side won 2-1. Martial, who was one of the goal-scorers for Man Utd, had caught Man City goalkeeper Ederson out at the near post before netting his side’s second goal of the match.

In the return leg of the derby, on Sunday, the Frenchman put Man Utd 1-0 up in the 30th minute at Old Trafford. A fantastic free-kick from midfielder Bruno Fernandes set the goal up for Martial, who then volleyed beyond Man City goalkeeper Ederson. The latter clearly looked furious with himself as he should have done better to stop the goal.

The second goal was a screamer scored by Scott McTominay in the extra time before the final whistle and the win meant, Man Utd completed their first league double over Man City in 10 years. The last time the Red Devils won both the Manchester derbies in a Premier League season was back in 2009-10 edition when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge.

By scoring in Man Utd’s 2-0 victory Sunday, Martial also equaled his best-ever Premier League goal tally in a single season, with 11 goals. He overall has scored 16 goals across all competitions this season.

The triumph also saw Man Utd go 10 matches straight without a loss across all competitions. Now, the former champions are just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League points table.

Man Utd’s next fixture is their Round of 16, second leg match against LASK in the Europa League. Following that, they head to London to lock horns against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. It will be an interesting clash as Tottenham are now managed by Jose Mourinho, who was sacked by Man Utd last season. Their first leg in the Premier League this season took place in December where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won 2-1 at home.
