  • Luiz has yet to get new deal with Arsenal
  • Luiz may leave Emirates Stadium after one season
  • Arteta may try to fix finances to keep Luiz

David Luiz was one of the biggest catches last year and most thought that he agreed to a two-year deal. As it turns out, the Brazilian and the Gunners agreed only to a 12-month stay. To keep the 33-year-old midfielder, Arsenal would have to activate the $152,000 a week contract of Luiz.

The 12-month agreement was revealed by Sky Sports after most believed Luiz had agreed to a two-year agreement. With big money needed to retain the Brazilian, that would have been an easier decision for the Gunners if not for budget problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. No decision has been made as of this writing and this is subject to change.

Luiz reportedly holds close ties with Mikel Arteta. Most feel that the Gunners coach will do everything in his power to keep the defensive midfielder. However, Arteta will have to find a way to make the team's finances work. With strict budgets implemented, the chance of that happening is not looking so good. But then again, negotiations between Arsenal and Luiz could be a possibility.

Though several other players have not exactly struck it well with Arteta, all seems fine between him and Luz. He understands the Spaniard means well and wants players and the team to improve. But while he lauds the efforts of the 38-year-old coach, his tenure could come up short unless he is re-signed to a new deal.

If Arsenal fails to secure Luiz, they are likely to bank on several players coming in this summer. William Saliba will return from a loan to Saint Etienne and there is also Pablo Mari who is expected to be signed from Flamengo. Should he stay on, Luiz could get competition from the 26-year-old football player. However, the Brazilian is willing to adjust if the Spanish center back does arrive.

“It doesn’t matter the side, it doesn’t matter which position. You guys know I played a lot of positions during my career. I’m always ready for that,” Luiz said.

Clubs have until June 23 to negotiate short-term extensions with players who have expiring deals by June 30. Should this be unresolved, the Premier League will issue special guidelines to address the matter.
