KEY POINTS

  • Fosu-Mensah is locked until next season for United
  • Fosu-Mensah's deal was activated since January
  • Fosu-Mensah is out to show Solskjaer he can still play at high level

Timothy Fosu-Mensah can finally heave a big sigh of relief. Manchester United activated the one-year extension in his contract, giving the Dutch midfielder one less thing to worry about. His current deal was almost up and the 22-year-old was clueless about what the future held for him.

According to Stats Perform, the contract extension was already activated as early as January. Coincidentally, this was about the same time that Fosu-Mensah was set to suit up for United, a chance for him that he can still play football at a high level. The Dutch footballer is coming off a knee injury which he suffered when he played for the Cottagers. Much of this was discussed in a previous post.

Also, it means that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept the faith in Fosu-Mensah. He was one of the name-checked players by the Red Devils manager with the team plagued by injuries. Once football action resumes, the midfielder will finally get that chance.

Fosu-Mensah has spent the last two seasons on loan at Palace and Fulham. The last time he played for United was back in 2017 with the team still being handled by Jose Mourinho. He underwent knee surgery in April of last year and has not seen action since.

The Dutch midfielder becomes the latest player to be given a contract beyond this season. Eric Bailly got a two-year extension in January while talks with Nemanja Matic kicked off last month and is still ongoing. Tahith Chong also signed a new two-year deal and the only player who has yet to extended is Angel Gomes. His fate should be known soon, Omnisport reported.

As for Fosu-Mensah, the lull should further help him heal better. Although he seems good to go, the Dutch midfielder may want to consider the string of bad lucks he has had the past months. With a new lease on life, Fosu-Mensah hopes not to disappoint and prove why Solskjaer had his eye on him since January.

Football action remains hanging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. League officials are left to decide on the fate of the suspended season which could resume (but in closed doors) or scrapped altogether.
