KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool ready to officially claim first title after 30 years
  • Robertson aware of risks but trusts clubs on safety measures
  • Liverpool needs just six points to be crowned champions

Liverpool is nearing its first title in 30 years and raring to finish the job. The prospect of doing so became a reality following a unanimous vote passed on Wednesday that would allow teams to return to contact training. Unless something comes up, league action will resume by the middle of June.

Aston Villa will host Sheffield United behind-closed-doors while Arsenal will travel to Manchester City on June 17. These two matches are nothing compared to the games set for June 20. Liverpool will be back in action on that day, facing Everton at Goodison Park.

After a long lay-off, the Reds are confident they can finish what they started. They need just six points in their final nine games to be crowned champions of England, the first time in 30 years. Depending on the result of other matches, the Reds could even have an easier time. But before thinking that far, Liverpool needs to get its boys in shape. They restarted training last week at Melwood with CDC guidelines in place. With contact training back, clubs are expected to take their training to a more serious level.

Regardless, it remains that there are some clubs and players wary about returning to action. Reports of several teams showing players and personnel testing positive for COVID-19 is not helping the cause. But for Andy Robertson, he understands why some teams are anxious about playing with the coronavirus still in the air. However, he added that he is confident that the club is doing its part in making sure in ensuring player safety, Sky Sports reported.

“I can understand people being a wee bit nervous but the people in our squad who were nervous about it at the start, I don’t think they are now," Robertson said.

Robertson admitted that being on the verge of winning the title has rendered mixed emotions. Wattford's Troy Deeney said that Liverpool's title will be a bit tainted due to the coronavirus. However, Robertson could care less and simply wants to get things over and done with.

“It’s not the same without fans but it’s something that we need to get used to just now and then hopefully the fans can come back sooner rather than later,” he said.
