KEY POINTS

  • Willian is open to staying with Chelsea on a temporary deal
  • Willian is aware he may not get long-term contract for now
  • Willian is focusing on remaining games if season resumes

Willian remains clueless on what the future holds and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made his predicament worse. With clubs curbing down on expenses, the likelihood of the 33-year-old moving to a new team is not looking good after this season. However, it appears the Brazilian is open to anything right now, including a temporary deal with Chelsea.

Willian was looking for a three-year deal and some teams were willing to give it to him. Among those teams include Tottenham and Arsenal. However, that is now subject to change with the coronavirus factoring in. There has been no update on the interest of both teams and Willian could end up with only one option in the end. And that option is to consider the offer of Chelsea - a two-year deal. But even this holds some uncertainty due to the pandemic. The Blues may change that offer, the least of which is a one-year deal.

In a previous report, it was mentioned that Lampard wanted to address the contract situation of their players. Olivier Giroud, another player who was allegedly seeking a long-term deal, has agreed to a one-year pact. Willy Caballero, another player with a contract issue, also agreed to a one-year extension. From the looks of it, William may agree to a temporary deal until things return to normal.

Speaking to Esporte Interativo, Willian said he is aware that the situation right now complicates things for him. He is aware that the Blues are unlikely to offer him anything better than the two-year deal handed to him. Willian admitted that he is in a tough spot but will nevertheless try to focus on the current season for the meantime.

“The situation is difficult because of this. I really don’t know if it will be possible [to stay]. My goal is to continue working and focus on the remainder of the season, so that Chelsea can continue winning games," Willian said.

Aside from Giroud and Willian, there is a third player who needs addressing. The contract of Pedro Rodriguez will expire at the end of this season. He is practically in the same situation that the Brazilian is facing although Lampard may address it soon. At least four teams are interested in the 32-year-old Spaniard. These are Roma, Real Bettis, Inter Miami and Vissel Kobe.
