KEY POINTS

  • Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will now be known by the name Wales
  • Prince William inherited King Charles III's previous title, Prince of Wales, and Kate Middleton became Princess of Wales
  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Prince George and his younger siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are using a new last name following the death of their great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II earlier this month.

After Prince William and Kate Middleton were named the new Prince and Princess of Wales by King Charles III, the couple's three children inherited new titles and will now be known by the name Wales, Fox News reported.

Since their birth, 9-year-old Prince George, 7-year-old Princess Charlotte and 4-year-old Prince Louis have used the surname Cambridge, as their parents were previously the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,

Following King Charles III's accession to the throne, the new monarch announced during his first address on Sept. 9 that his oldest son, Prince William, 40, wiill now be known by his own previous title, the Prince of Wales, and Middleton would become the Princess of Wales, a title last used by William's late mother, Princess Diana.

The King's wife Camilla, whom he married in 2005, was previously the Duchess of Cornwall. She is now queen consort.

During Queen Elizabeth II's 70th anniversary as a monarch earlier this year, the late monarch revealed her "sincere wish" that Camilla would be known as the "queen consort" when her eldest son succeeds her.

"And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service," the longest-reigning British monarch said in a statement issued by Buckingham Palace in February, according to USA Today.

After his father became King, Prince William became the first in line to the British throne, and his children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis became the second, third and fourth in line, respectively.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte were referred to with their new titles in the Order of Service for Queen Elizabeth's funeral at Westminster Abbey Monday. They were called Prince George of Wales and Princess Charlotte of Wales. Their youngest brother Prince Louis, who stayed home for the state funeral, would be Prince Louis of Wales.

The children's names will also be changed at their school Lambrook, a co-educational preparatory school located in the Berkshire countryside, near the family's new home at Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, who officially quit royal duties last year, are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. But their children, 3-year-old Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor and 1-year-old Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, can inherit prince and princess titles following their grandfather's accession.

However, there has been no official announcement of a title change as of this writing.
