Prince William Wants Kate Middleton To Be Called ‘Princess’ Like Mom Diana

Prince William wanted his wife Kate Middleton to be called “princess” like his mother Princess Diana.

The Duchess of Cambridge is celebrating her 38th birthday today. According to a previous report, her husband, Prince William, wanted her to be addressed in the same way as the late Princess of Wales. Apparently, this didn’t happen since most still refer to the future queen as “Kate.”

“Despite being given the title of Duke of Cambridge, William let it be known on his wedding day through one of his key aides that he wanted to continue to be known as Prince William,” Katie Nicholl shared.

“By default Kate is likely to be addressed as Princess Catherine. It will, no doubt, rattle some cages within the royal hierarchy.”

Nicholl added that the Duke of Cambridge’s PR team tried to encourage the moniker for Middleton to stick in the public imagination just like what was done for Princess Diana.

“Paddy Harverson, the Prince of Wales’s communications secretary, suggested the public be encouraged to use the names Prince William and Princess Catherine if they preferred,” the Daily Telegraph reported in 2011.

Prince William and Middleton are not the only members of the Firm who wanted the title. Nicholl revealed that Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, also wanted the same title for the latter. However, the Queen rejected her favorite royal’s request for a reason.

Her Majesty felt that allowing Sophie to be called Princess Sophie is an incorrect usage of the title. Technically, only women who are born in the royal family are entitled to be called “princess” like Princess Anne, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. This also applies to Prince William and Middleton’s only daughter, Princess Charlotte.

Prince William’s mother Princess Diana was called “princess” but the title was bestowed to her by the public. When she was still alive, she was more popularly known as HRH Diana, Princess of Wales until her 1996 divorce from Prince Charles when she was stripped off her royal title.
