KEY POINTS

  • Princess Charlotte is turning 6 years old Sunday
  • Kensington Palace released a new portrait of the princess that was taken by her mother, Kate Middleton
  • Twitter users claimed Charlotte looked like her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth's "mini-me" in the snap

Princess Charlotte is growing up fast and is taking after her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in looks, according to royal fans.

On Saturday, Kensington Palace released a new portrait of Princess Charlotte in honor of her sixth birthday, which is on Sunday. In the image, a charming Charlotte is wearing a blue floral dress and wearing her long blonde hair down in a stylish side part as she beams at the camera.

The young royal's mother, Kate Middleton, took the photo, something she does each year for the portraits of her and Prince William's three children. According to Daily Mail royal correspondent Rebecca English and Majesty magazine editor Joe Little, the picture was snapped this weekend at their country home of Anmer Hall in Norfolk, England.

This appeared to suggest that Prince William, Middleton and their kids will be celebrating Princess Charlotte's birthday weekend at the Sandringham residence.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released a new photograph of Princess Charlotte to mark her sixth birthday tomorrow. It was taken by her mother in Norfolk this weekend. #happybirthday," Little tweeted.

The adorable portrait received praise from Twitter users, some of whom claimed that the little princess bears a striking resemblance to the Queen.

"She looks a lot like the Queen!!" one person commented.

"She looks exactly like her Great Grandma the Queen!" another added.

"Those Mountbatten-Windsor genes are STRONG: For comparison: the Queen at age 6 vs. Princess Charlotte at age 6," Ellie Hall wrote, posting side-by-side photos of Princess Charlotte and Queen Elizabeth II at the same age.

Others suggested that Princess Charlotte also takes after her father Prince William and grandmother Princess Diana.

One person wrote, "Omg she is all grown up and sooo blond such a beautiful little lady! She is definitely her dad’s mini me."

"This not so little girl turns six tomorrow... it seems yesterday that Princess Charlotte was born. Hoping she has a wonderful birthday tomorrow! I see so much of William, The Queen and Diana in her!" another added.

This would not be the first time that people have compared Prince William's only daughter to his grandmother. When the palace released her first day of school portrait at Willcocks Nursery School in Kensington in 2018, royal fans also noted that Princess Charlotte looked a lot like the monarch.

Hassan Ugail, a professor of visual computing at the University of Bradford, also noted the two royals' resemblance.

"They are indeed strikingly similar. Usually, if a comparison between two images return 70% or higher we consider it to be the same person," Ugail told Express. "In this sense, I feel some existing facial recognition systems may even fail to distinguish between the two, given the corresponding images are fed as input for comparison."
