Princess Diana and Prince Charles were still affectionate months after their marital problems started.

Princess Diana told Andrew Morton in her biography “Diana: Her True Story” that her relationship with her husband, the Prince of Wales, crumbled following the birth of their second son, Prince Harry. Princess Diana did not like the way Prince Charles said, “Oh god, it’s a boy!” after learning that they had another son because the heir apparent had always wanted a girl for their second child.

However, despite their marital issues in 1984, they were still very affectionate toward each other. In fact, royal photographer Kent Gavin caught them “having an affectionate kiss at Windsor during a break from playing polo” back in May 1985, which surprised many royal fans, Express reported.

According to royal author Angela Levin in her 2018 book “Harry: Conversations with the Prince,” the Prince and Princess of Wales’s apparent feud was already visible when they appeared at the hospital steps for Prince Harry’s public debut. While Princess Diana appeared happy as they showed their second child to the public, Prince Charles didn’t look the same.

“As she stood on the steps she turned to face her husband, her expression a mixture of love, vulnerability and yearning,” Levin wrote.

“Charles, however, stood with his hands behind his back, a gesture typical of Prince Philip, and did not return his wife’s gaze. It seemed even at this joyous, thankful time the mismatched couple could not conceal their differences.”

Princess Diana said six weeks before the Duke of Sussex’s birth that she and her husband were doing great.

“Charles and I were very, very close to each other,”Princess Diana said.

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said the same, but things changed when they welcomed Prince Harry. His birth marked a shift in the future king’s marriage.

Princess Diana was so hurt and disappointed with Prince Charles’ reaction after learning that they were having another boy. “Something inside [her] closed off,” Morton wrote before adding that it triggered their rocky marriage which ended in divorce.

Prince Charles reconnected with Camilla Parker Bowles in 1986 while Princess Diana started dating James Hewitt.
