Princess Diana was “very wily.”

The late Princess of Wales was seen as a sweet, thoughtful and beloved royal. However, some experts claimed that Princess Diana could also be deceitful and manipulative.

“Diana was very wily, and Diana knew how to sex things up so she would come out of any situation smelling of roses to many people, while Sarah would just blunder,” Lady Colin Campbell said.

In Channel 5’s documentary “Royals at War,” royal experts spoke about Princess Diana and Ferguson’s alleged rivalry and complex relationship. According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, the Princess of Wales was furious when an uncomplimentary rival book was due out weeks before her own book. Morton advised that the only thing they could do is to have another “fact.”

“Well, Sarah and Andrew have just been to Sandringham to see the Queen to talk about a separation,” Princess Diana shared.

Morton said that he wrote a story about it and it landed on the front pages. It was “pretty ruthless stuff.”

By doing so, Princess Diana destroyed the Duchess of York’s reputation to Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was reportedly “furious” when the separation was leaked and the palace was “convinced that the duchess had handed out the information herself.”

They accused Ferguson of hiring a PR company. Tina Brown author of “The Diana Chronicles” said that Ferguson never suspected Princess Diana as the source of the leak.

Evening Standard’s royal editor Robert Jobson said that Princess Diana was “quite calculating” when it came to Ferguson. One time, Princess Diana was offered a new car and she refused but suggested that Ferguson tried it out first to see the people’s reaction.

“So she almost used Sarah as a bit of a yellow canary, and if things went wrong she would step away from the situation and poor Sarah would get all the bad publicity,” Jobson recalled.

Princess Diana was reportedly jealous of Ferguson because she got along so well with the other members of the royal family. Ferguson would go carriage-driving with Prince Philip and out shooting with Prince Charles.

One time, the Prince of Wales also reportedly told Princess Diana why she couldn’t be just like Ferguson. According to Katie Nicholl, the rivalry between the two women stemmed from within the royal family.
