KEY POINTS

  • Sony canceled its appearances in two major gaming events
  • The company lost its chances to show its latest announcements about new titles and the PS5
  • Sony could release new livestreams or showcase in other events to make up for it

Sony has recently been skipping events due to COVID-19 outbreak concerns. The company has already missed two of its supposed appearances. So when will Sony be able to announce new details about the new PS5 console?

Canceled Events

So far, Sony has confirmed that it’ll be pulling out of the upcoming Game Developers Conference 2020 this March and the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East 2020 that is about to end on March 1. More than just simply making an appearance during these events, Sony even had reveals planned out for them.

Sony was about to showcase some games during its GDC 2020 appearance, but the GDC organizers has since canceled the event. Many major exhibitors also pulled out of the convention, which would have left almost half of the showfloor empty. Meanwhile, PAX East 2020 will still press on without the exhibitors that chose to be absent from the event.

Missing Out On Reveals

Sony has skipped events which could be crucial in showing announcements for the PlayStation 4 releases in the coming months. Both events could have revealed more details about the upcoming "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" and "The Last Of Us 2.” The classic remake of "Final Fantasy 7" is expected for release this coming April after it got delayed from its original March release. Meanwhile, the sequel for the “The Last of Us” series is expected in May.

More than just revealing details about these games, Sony could have dropped some information about the upcoming PS5. So far, their PAX East 2020 lineup mostly has upcoming titles, while the GDC 2020 was expected to allot a large space for Sony.

Uncertain Dates

So far, Sony could have the upcoming E3 2020 and its State of Play livestreams for the year. Sony has yet to confirm if it’s going to return to E3 2020 this year after launching its own event to reveal new hardware and games for the PlayStation. The company could partner up with this event again to make up for the missed appearances due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Unless E3 2020 organizers also cancel the event due to the outbreak, it’s possible for Sony to consider the situation.

Other than the upcoming events in the first half of 2020, Sony could just use its State of Play livestreams again to make up for the lost opportunities to make announcements. The upcoming games and even fresh information about the PS5 could also be revealed. More livestreams could be more likely if Sony dodges more events due to the outbreak.
