Actress Sarah Hyland's wedding to Wells Adams last weekend also served as an unofficial reunion of her "Modern Family" co-stars, but there was one on-screen family member noticeably missing from the event: Ty Burrell.

Burrell, who played father Phil to Hyland's character Haley Dunphy for 11 seasons on the ABC show, didn't appear in any photos from the star's wedding day, and now fellow "Modern Family" alum Jesse Tyler Ferguson has revealed why.

Speaking to "Entertainment Tonight" on Monday, Ferguson revealed Burrell was absent from the affair due to a "family emergency."

Ferguson, who officiated the ceremony, said Burrell was originally meant to do the honors but pulled out just days before the wedding. "I don't know if people know this, but Ty Burrell was meant to do it," Ferguson told the outlet.

"So, I got a phone call 12 days before the wedding, and that's why Ty wasn't there. He had stuff going on."

Hyland and her now-husband's original decision to have Burrell officiate their ceremony shouldn't come as a surprise to fans of the cast. Adams, a Bachelor Nation alum, famously asked Burrell and Hyland's longtime on-screen mom Claire, played by actress Julie Bowen, for permission to propose to Hyland back in 2019.

"They really, really are like my second set of parents," Hyland said of Adams' gesture to get their "blessing."

Ferguson wasn't the only cast member in attendance at the wedding, which was held on Aug. 20 at a winery near Santa Barbara, California. Sofia Vergara, Ariel Winter, and Nolan Gould, were also present for Hyland's big day.

As for the rest of the cast who didn't appear in photos, Ferguson said "everyone was invited" but that not everyone "could make it."
