It may have appeared as if Prince William had the ideal childhood filled with luxurious castles and lavished vacations but behind closed doors, the eldest son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana struggled to find joy.

Although the Prince and Princess of Wales announced their separation in December 1992, their 1991 royal tour to Canada took a dramatic turn when William “stormed off” after becoming upset with his mother prior to the family’s departure.

According to Katie Nicholl’s book “William and Harry,” Diana and Charles’ unraveling marriage had “taken a toll on William.” Although the two continued to remain united in public, their private rows led to a minor break down for William when the family boarded the yacht for their trip.

“Diana had a habit of sending mixed signals when it came to cameras, and William had had enough,” the author explained.

“He was at a difficult age and stormed off when his mother asked him to pose for a photograph with [royal yacht] Britannia’s crew,” Nicholl shared.

Although Prince Charles was able to convince William to wave to the crowd on land, the young prince was in a foul mood for the remainder of the day.

While William had some disagreements with his mother, Princess Diana often sought comfort from her son following arguments with his father.

Charles and Diana finally divorced in 1996, a year prior to her tragic death in Paris.
