KEY POINTS

  • William Regal is still rumored to make his WWE return sometime in 2023
  • Jim Ross credits him for taking a chance at AEW and helping their talent grow
  • Regal returning to WWE simply makes too much sense not to happen

The pro wrestling landscape is in line for another shift after news broke about William Regal heading back to WWE sometime in 2023 following a short stint with All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

Though it is still not a sure thing, the main belief among pro wrestling fans is that Regal will figure to play a major role on WWE programming as a manager on the main roster or back to assume his role in NXT as the general manager.

Regardless, Regal continues to be one of the most revered figures in the industry for his long body of work, and iconic pro wrestling commentator Jim Ross was quick to acknowledge his value to AEW on his podcast.

"He's a valuable asset to AEW, or wherever he may be in any company. It's been a blessing to have him around because he was one of my guys whom I really worked hard to salvage a career for back in the day. He's been a very valuable resource. You can't replace guys with that kind of experience," Ross said.

"Again, a very valuable asset to wherever he may be. I don't know what the future holds for him. But, I mean, he's one of those guys that you can't replace easily, or at all. I don't know if you can replace him at all, quite frankly. He's been an amazing boost for us."

Ross and Regal's journey to working together again in AEW are somewhat similar.

Ross joined AEW after letting his contract run out in 2019 and continues to play his role as a full-time commentator in the Jacksonville, Florida-based pro wrestling promotion, while Regal was fired from WWE in the name of budget cuts.

Many AEW fans were shocked to see Regal partner up with Maxwell Jacob Friedmann (MJF) to nab him his first AEW World Championship win–though they were equally as shocked when the upstart heel turned on Regal which sent him to the hospital (in storyline).

Former NXT star EC3 recently spoke with Sportskeeda and told them Regal regretted joining the company, noting that "there's very much a maturity issue here within management."

Whether Regal's comments at the time were pointed towards AEW chief Tony Khan or someone else is completely unknown.

However, WWE has too much of a connection to Regal that he simply cannot afford to leave behind.

One thing that fans are adamant about Regal returning is his working relationship with Triple H and another is his son, Bailey Matthews (ring name: Charley Dempsey), being within the system.

Regal joining WWE appears to be a foregone conclusion in the minds of those closely following the story, but only WWE's upper management will know if and when it does happen.
