No one is more keenly aware of the New York Jets’ recent struggles than head coach Rex Ryan, but at least the 50-year-old has a sense of humor about it.

On Saturday night, Ryan took time out of his post-practice jaunt with his fellow coaches to pose for a picture with a Jets fan who wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “This team makes me drink.” For Joseph Grinwis, a lifelong Jets fan, the photo-op with Ryan was a nerve-wracking experience.

“I was a little bit ‘Oh no’ inside. I mean, the one night I’m wearing this shirt, you know?” Grinwis, a resident of Wantage Township, N.J., told Yahoo Sports. “But he was cool with it. Maybe he wasn’t on the inside but he seemed cool with it.”

Grinwis bumped into Ryan in Cortland, N.Y., the site of the Jets’ annual training camp. Grinwis was in town to watch the squad practice when he spotted Ryan around midnight last Saturday outside of Dark Horse Tavern.

Ryan discussed the trip to Dark Horse Tavern during a Sunday press conference. “The entire coaching staff and scouting department went out last night. That’s how close this group is. And not because you make then, well half of them,” Ryan joked to reporters. “But we all go out and we sit around, we talk … had a water.”

Even though “This team makes me drink” T-shirt, Grinwis was quick to inform Ryan about his love for the Jets. Ryan reportedly told the fan that his support for the team was appreciated, Yahoo Sports reports.

More importantly, Grinwis claims that Ryan thought his T-shirt was funny. “He looked at it and laughed, Grinwis told Yahoo Sports. “He didn’t make a comment. He just laughed.”
