A 39-year-old father of twins was left with life-altering injuries after he was run over in a road rage incident in Ontario, Canada, last month.

Justin Smith said the incident began when he spotted a car parked in a fire route while he was picking up food for his family at the Westway Plaza near Kipling and Dixon on Aug. 26, Global News reported.

Smith told the outlet that he advised the unidentified driver to move his vehicle before getting into his own car to drive home.

"[The driver] didn't say anything back to me," Smith told Global News from his hospital bed. "So I really didn't think anything of it."

However, the driver began to follow Smith and pulled up beside him at an intersection, where they exchanged heated words. According to Smith, the driver continued to follow him to his apartment parking lot.

Smith said he tried to enter his building on foot through the front entrance. But the driver sped toward Smith and struck him before fleeing.

Authorities said they obtained footage showing that two suspects, a man and a woman, were inside the car at the time of the incident, CTV News reported.

The vehicle, described as a silver, four-door Honda Civic, is now being traced by police. The case is being investigated as an assault with a weapon.

Smith told CTV News that he shattered his tibia in the incident and will require reconstruction surgery. He also has extensive bruising all over his body.

"The only part of my body that wasn't affected or hurt or scratched was my face and head. I have no idea how that happened, but I'm absolutely lucky to be alive," he told the outlet.

Smith, who is the father of twin 10-year-old boys, said he is worried that he may not be able to walk properly again and go back to work.

"I might not be able to go back to my regular life. Do what I love to do you know, support my family ...play with my kids," he said. "It's a scary thought."

As of Saturday night, more than $45,000 Canadian dollars ($34,000) had been raised by 633 donations for Smith on a GoFundMe page organized by Ania Russocki on behalf of Smith's partner, Magda Szozda, according to Vancouver Sun.

"My beloved cousin Magda Szozda got the call no one wants to get," wrote Russocki. "Her partner Justin Smith, father of their twin boys, was run over as a result of an altercation over someone else being parked in an illegal parking spot. He is now in hospital with life-changing injuries and facing several operations and the prospect of not returning to his breadwinning job working for Canada Post anytime soon."
