KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd defeated Atalanta 3-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday
  • Man Utd were trailing 0-2 at the half-time break
  • Rashford, Maguire and Ronaldo scored for the Red Devils

Cristiano Ronaldo said Manchester United “never give up” after scoring a winner against Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Manchester United were trailing 0-2 during half-time at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford, who was making his second appearance of the season, opened the scoring for the Red Devils. Rising to the occasion, skipper Harry Maguire netted a 75th-minute equalizer before Ronaldo scored the decisive third goal and earned the crucial three points for the Red Devils.

“Yes! The Theater Of Dreams is on fire! We are alive! We are Man. United and we never give up! This is Old Trafford!” wrote Ronaldo in a Twitter post after Man Utd’s nail-biting victory over Atalanta.

The 36-year-old Portuguese forward, who had been on the receiving end of major criticism for the dip in form of Manchester United in the last few games, netted one of his signature headers as he rose to collect a Luke Shaw cross and headed it into the bottom corner to take Manchester United home.

Ronaldo now has netted a late and dramatic winner for Manchester United in two back-to-back Champions League fixtures. The former Real Madrid star had also scored the winner against Villarreal, that time in the 95th minute.

Ronaldo was hailed by Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who himself has been under immense pressure as his side had dropped points twice prior to the Atlanta clash.

"He's great in front of goal. If anyone wants to criticize him for work-rate or attitude, just watch this game. Watch how he runs around. The header is not on a par with his Roma one but he’s still got a leap and timing like no-one else," Solskjaer was quoted by Man Utd’s official website, as saying in a post-match interview with MUTV and BT Sport.

Meanwhile, Manchester United captain Maguire credited the Old Trafford fans for creating an atmosphere that kept the boys going despite trailing 0-2 at the first half.

"We got cheered and clapped off at half-time from these fans, so they made a big difference. They gave us that energy, they gave us that belief and we got the result that they deserve. Tonight was a special night in terms of the togetherness, the spirit, the fight that we showed in the second half to keep believing and to keep pushing and like I said, the fans gave us that. The energy we felt from the fans in the second half was incredible," Maguire was quoted by Man Utd’s official website, as saying in the post-match interview.
