Ronda Rousey suffered a defeat at the hands of reigning bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes of Brazil at the UFC 207 octagon in a fight that lasted 48 seconds, prompting a barrage of reactions from fans and critics on social media.

The 29-year-old former champion was returning to UFC after fellow American Holly Holm knocked her out in Melbourne, Australia, 13 months ago, in a highly anticipated face-off between Rousey and the defending champion.

However, Rousey showed a severe lack of defense as the Brazilian pounded her with punch after punch, forcing the referee to intervene. Nunes was in complete control during the under-one-minute bout, causing spectators to wonder if this would be Rousey’s last UFC outing.

“Forget about Ronda Rousey!” Nunes told the crowd late Friday. “She’s going to go do movies. Forget about her. She has a lot of money already.”

Following her loss to Holm last year, Rousey nearly vanished from public view and took time away from the gym to work on her acting career. However, after the bantamweight title changed hands two times, the former champion agreed to return to the octagon for a shot at winning her title back.

Despite the loss, Rousey is taking home $3 million, matching UFC star Conor McGregor’s match purse for the biggest publicized check in U.F.C. history. Nunes, despite her stellar performance, can only claim a fraction of Rousey’s assured pay-off.

Twitter was rife with memes about Nunes’ blitzkrieg and Rousey’s humiliating loss, while some hailed her as the pioneer in the male-dominated UFC sphere despite her recent performances.
