Russia has cancelled a proposed sale of advanced S-300 surface-to-air missile system to Syria, according to the Russian daily newspaper, Vedomisti.

Russia and Syria signed a $100 million deal for the transaction last year.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the cancellation of the arms sale may have been the result of President Vladimir Putin’s to to Israel earlier this week. Both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres reportedly discussed the crisis in Syria with Putin during his visit.

Russia has come under increasing criticism from the west and other nations for having supplied military arms to the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
