Russia's Ministry of Defence last provided the country's death toll from the invasion of Ukraine back in March, which claimed at the time that Russian fatalities numbered 1,351.

Independent Russian media outlet Mediazona reported that it has been able to confirm 5,801 Russian military deaths in the war as of Thursday.

The ongoing conflict may have caused Russia to suffer between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties among its forces, U.S. Department of Defense Under Secretary Colin Kahl said earlier this month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose country allegedly lost 10,000 troops in the first 100 days of Russia's invasion, has urged Russian soldiers to flee.

"If they want to survive - it's time for the Russian military to run away. Go home," Zelensky said Monday during an address, according to Reuters.

Zelensky's speech comes as Ukrainian forces launched an offensive near the Russian-occupied city of Kherson in south Ukraine.

Explosions were observed in the Kherson area Tuesday, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne claimed. Residents of the city reported gunfire and explosions on social media, but it was unclear who was firing.

Ukrainian forces increased their artillery fire across the south, while their long-range precision strikes were disrupting Russian supplies, the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in an intelligence update.

"Ukraine is taking back its own," Zelensky said.

Russia's defense ministry claimed a Ukrainian offensive in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions "failed miserably."

The MoD noted that "it is not yet possible to confirm the extent of Ukrainian advances."
