A Russian general has suffered a brutal death in Ukraine as Russia continues to suffer massive losses amid the war.

In a recording of an intercepted phone call released by Ukraine’s Secret Service on Wednesday, a Russian soldier was heard telling his friend about the gruesome death of his brigade commander who suffered a blow to the belly.

“The brigade commander (general’s position) got hit. They collected his guts and put them back in his belly and sent him by helicopter… They took him to Russia, there his heart failed,” the soldier said.

The Russian soldier did not reveal the name of the general or when he died. Ukraine’s Secret Service also did not reveal when the phone call was intercepted or where the soldier was at the time of the conversation.

Since the beginning of the war, Ukrainian forces have killed at least 36 high-ranking Russian officials, including Lt-Col Oleg Yevseev, 43, who led the 291st Artillery Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, according to the Evening Standard. Yevseev was buried in the Siberian city of Omsk. Russia has yet to release details of how the commander died.

Ukrainian forces had also killed two other Russian generals after hitting a command post of the 49th Zagalnovyskoy Army near the occupied region of Kherson. The strike occurred on April 22. Ukrainian authorities are still working on identifying the generals killed in the attack, the country’s Ministry of Defense said in a Telegram post.

The deaths of high-ranking Russian officials come as the war in Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, stretches into its third month. It is unclear how many Russian soldiers have died amid the invasion. However, a Russian soldier was recorded saying that 25,900 Russian troops have died since the beginning of the war, according to an intercepted phone call.

The figures are much higher than the toll claimed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which puts deaths among Russian soldiers at 22,400 as of Wednesday. British Defense Secretary George Wallace on Monday indicated that as many as 15,000 Russian military personnel have been killed in the war.
