  • Salma Hayek returned to work in April 2021
  • The actress says she still doesn't have the energy she once had
  • Hayek also talks about playing a superhero in Marvel’s “Eternals”

Salma Hayek opened up about her battle with COVID-19 and revealed how the doctor "begged" her to get hospitalized because it was "really bad."

In an interview with Variety, Hayek said she contracted the virus last year. "My doctor begged me to go to the hospital because it was so bad. I said, ‘No, thank you. I’d rather die at home.'"

The 54-year-old actress also disclosed that she was isolated for seven weeks at her home, and at one stage, she was even put on oxygen to survive. Hayek said that to date she hasn't completely recovered as she lacks energy.

The actress returned to work last month to film Ridley Scott’s "House of Gucci," starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, and Jared Leto. "It was not a lot of time," Hayek said. "It was easy. It was the perfect job to just get back into it. I had started doing Zooms at one point, but I could only do so many because I would get so tired."

The crime drama is slated to release on Nov. 24, this year. The actress also talked about working in a Marvel movie, "Eternals."

"It never crossed my mind to be in a Marvel movie. I guess that I thought that boat had sailed, and it was an absolute shock," she said, adding: "All of a sudden, I got a call: 'They want to talk to you about a new franchise.' And I was like, 'What?' And I said OK, but they don’t tell you any information until you’re on the call."

Hayek also noted that it was "hard" to play an action hero being a "Mexican and a woman."

"It’s really hard to be an action hero if you’re a Mexican and a woman. But to be an action hero, being Mexican, a woman, and my age, it felt like they were punking me," she continued. "And then the worst part is that I was one of the first people they cast. I had to keep my mouth shut for so many months. I couldn’t tell a soul. And I couldn’t wait for the day that I could say it."

The action-adventure is slated to release on Nov. 5, this year.
