A new Samsung patent has surfaced recently showing a possible new style of folding for foldable display smartphones. Potentially, this new design could be added to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold. Here’s what we know about the new patent.

According to Tech Radar, the new Samsung patent features a large tablet with two side displays that can be flapped on the larger screen. The side displays can be flapped toward the screen to “close” the device, while flapping the displays to the back minimizes the screen. Lastly, using the device at its full spread shows a larger screen.

So far, this design has only been seen in the patent and has yet to be confirmed as the official design for the upcoming Galaxy Fold.

This design is similar to Xiaomi’s foldable display device. However, the main difference between the two is that the Xiaomi device has camera grooves in place, while the Samsung device seems to provide more display space.

In Samsung’s latest smartphones, the new display almost bleeds out of the user’s hand as the display spans to the edges of the phone. It’s possible that Samsung has applied this design philosophy for the Galaxy Fold too.

As for other specs of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung has yet to reveal additional official details about their foldable display device. But while Samsung has yet to update fans, some speculations are already circulating about this new device.

Some sources said that the new Galaxy Fold will be weaker in performance compared to the current generation of smartphones. This is understandable as the Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s first entry in the foldable display device line, and it’s a whole new territory.

Speaking of the fresh industry, there are no significant innovations known for this type of technology, which limits not only Samsung but the whole competition when making these devices. Their longtime rival, Apple, has yet to enter the race. As of now, Huawei is the South Korean tech giant's closest competitor as it has developed their own foldable device called Mate X.

Eager fans will have to wait for Samsung to see what it is planning for this new device.
