A teenage boy was detained Thursday for raping a seven-year-old girl on the pretext of accompanying her to a nearby market. The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The unidentified accused, a grade 10 student who lived in the neighborhood, met the girl Wednesday evening and told her that he would accompany her to the market. He then lured her to a room in an isolated area where he raped her. A few minutes after the incident, the girl came back home running and narrated the ordeal to her parents. The father of the victim immediately informed the police.

“The family dialed emergency number and informed the police. A team was sent to the spot for primary investigation. The girl was taken for a medical examination, which confirmed rape,” a police officer said.

The accused, who was on the run following the incident, was caught and detained by the police.

“The next day, we were tipped-off on the accused. He was detained from a village road. He was produced in a juvenile court on Thursday and sent to an observation home,” the officer added. A case was registered and investigation was ongoing.
