Two golden retrievers, Maide and Max, were shot at their home’s yard in Pembroke Pines, Florida, early this month. According to the reports, an unidentified man entered the yard of a home in the Pasadena Lakes community and used a rifle with steel BBs to wound Madie and kill Max on Dec. 3.

According to the police, surveillance video showed Madie, the female dog, dying in a pool of blood in a corner of the yard after she was shot.

The male dog, Max, survived but was injured in the middle of his left side. Madie was also shot in the same area.

According to a report in the Local 10 News, the police believe the shooter aimed for the dogs' hearts. It is also believed that they were sleeping in the yard when the incident happened.

Charles Mione, the owner of the dogs, told the Daily Mail, “It’s deeply affected us, my children, my ex-wife, just me personally — it’s been very sad around the house these last couple of weeks since the dog has been gone.”

He added, “It was a 10-year-old golden retriever. I had her since she was a pup and she was taken away from me.”

According to reports, though seven-year-old Max recovered from his wound, his life was still in danger.

Mione said, “He has a fragment in him right now that's close to his aorta that the vet is concerned about. And maybe one day I come home and he may not be with us anymore. That’s a risk right now.”

A second BB fragment was discovered in Madie’s body during the autopsy, leading investigators to believe that she had been shot before the Dec 3 incident. The long hair on her body concealed the wound which healed on its own.

This is not the first high-profile case of animal cruelty in South Florida in recent months.

In October, a pit bull puppy, named Ollie, was found stabbed more than 50 times and stuffed into a suitcase in Hollywood. Police personnel found him after they received a phone call about an abandoned suitcase on 1900 block of Lee Street.

The dog was then taken to the VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital for treatment, where he underwent multiple surgeries. He died on Oct. 12. Ollie was believed to be about 2 years old at the time of the incident. Police later arrested Brendan Evans, 31, who is facing 17 counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
