KEY POINTS

  • Skylar Astin will portray Geena Davis’ son in an upcoming CBS drama
  • The actor’s character is a private investigator who ends up working for his mom
  • Davis will play an overbearing and super-achieving attorney on the show

Skylar Astin will take the lead alongside Geena Davis in CBS’ upcoming mother-and-son legal drama.

The 34-year-old actor has been cast to play the onscreen son of the 66-year-old actress for a show that will see their characters go through professional and personal obstacles as a family.

For the still-untitled drama, the “Pitch Perfect” star will be portraying Todd, a talented but seemingly directionless private investigator. After getting involved in some messy understandings, Todd loses his license, as per Deadline.

With his unorthodox means of obtaining clues and his mastery of technologies, surveillance and social media, Todd agrees to work as the in-house investigator for his mother, Joan (Davis).

Joan is an overbearing and super-achieving attorney, who, despite being very successful in her career, has been struggling from the recent dissolution of her marriage.

Todd has long been the “problem child” in his family, and Joan has made it known how much of a disappointment he has been to her. Hence, Todd will begrudgingly agree to work with his mother while he still doesn’t have his license.

The drama pilot is from writer and executive producer Scott Prendergast. Dr. Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw and Julia Eisenman are also executive producing, according to TVLine.

Astin proudly shared the news of his new project on Instagram Monday. He posted a screenshot of the Deadline report on his account and simply captioned it with the detective and thumbs-up emojis.

Fans showered his post with positive messages, and they also expressed how happy they were for him.

“YESSSSS! This sounds amazing. So happy for you,” one wrote.

“This is going to be great,” another added.

“Wait what? Didn’t you also just get signed to grey’s? So many things,” a different fan commented.

The news of Astin’s casting for the new legal drama comes a few weeks after he was tapped to play a recurring role on ABC’s long-running medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”

As previously reported, the actor will make his debut appearance on the show in the March 24 episode of Season 18 titled “Put the Squeeze on Me.”

Coincidentally, his character in “Grey’s Anatomy” is also named Todd. Described as a “charming and handsome” environmental sciences expert, Todd is rumored to be a potential love interest for Camilla Luddington’s Jo Wilson.
