The source of a mysterious banging sound in New Jersey that left police stumped was solved Thursday. A company was apparently using sound devices to scare off geese in the area, authorities said.

Authorities initially said they received multiple complaints beginning Sunday from residents who reported hearing loud banging sounds in the night. Most of the reports came from people living along the Passaic River, according to NJ.com. The sounds were heard as early as 5:55 p.m. and later, throughout the nights.

Sayreville Police said in a Facebook post that they’d investigated the reports and found that an unidentified private company was using loudspeakers to chase off geese in a park.

“A private company is responsible for the noises in the night,” Sayreville Police Department said. “The noises are used for geese control. We apologize for the confusion. We will continue to investigate this and hopefully come to a resolution that works for all. We will provide an update as soon as possible.”

Some residents were not so easily satisfied. Comments proliferated on the police department’s Facebook page about other purported instances of mysterious bangs.

“I’ve been hearing about loud bangs being heard all over the world with no explanation,” one person wrote.

“This is not exclusive to our area, this is happening worldwide and no one knows what is causing it,” another said.

The Sayreville Police Department piled a hefty dose of humor onto the conspiracy theorists on its page.

“UPDATED INFORMATION,” the department wrote. “According to what I’ve read and seen on YouTube, I have a strong suspicion that these noises are coming from alien spaceships as a warning sign for imminent attack. But according to the County Park Rangers, it’s them. The noises are set to loudspeakers in the parks to chase off geese. Yes, all hours of the night. Believe what you wish.”
