Stephen Curry has long been considered the greatest shooter of all time, and now his stats make it virtually inarguable. The Golden State Warriors star broke Ray Allen’s NBA record for most 3-pointers ever made Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Curry hit his record-setting 2,974th career 3-pointer just four minutes and 27 seconds into Golden State’s game against the New York Knicks.

“I never wanted to call myself the greatest shooter until I got that record,” Curry told reporters after the Warriors’ 105-96 win. “I’m comfortable saying that now.”

Curry finished the game with 22 points on 5-for-14 shooting from 3-point range. While Allen held the record for a decade, all signs suggest that Curry could be the 3-point leader for much, much longer.

At 33 years old, Curry isn’t slowing down. Not only is the point guard favored to win his third NBA MVP award, but he’s a more prolific 3-point shooter than ever before.

Curry is making a career-high 5.4 3-pointers per game, on pace to smash his single-season record of 402 3s in a year. Curry has made more than 285 3s in five separate seasons. No other player has even done it three times.

A 43.1% career shooter from behind the arc, Curry has made a higher percentage of 3s than any player that ranks in the top-150 all-time in 3-pointers made.

His prowess from 3-point range isn’t the only reason why Curry is the greatest shooter in NBA history. Curry’s 90.7% shooting from the free-throw line ranks first among all-time players. Curry has made 51.9% of his two-point field-goal attempts, putting him ahead of the likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Tim Duncan.

Averaging 24.3 points per game for his career, Curry is 19th on the all-time list. Curry has done so on just 17.5 attempts per game.

Kobe Bryant needed an average of 19.5 shots to score 25 points per game. Bird averaged 24.3 points on 19.3 attempts per game. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took 18.1 field goals per game for his 24.6 points per game.

Curry is averaging 26.9 points on 20.3 shots per game in the 2021-2022 season.
