A false tweet on a CBS Twitter account briefly reported Friday that Steve Jobs had died.

CBS's What's Trending thread tweeted reports of the recently retired Apple Inc. CEO's death Friday. The post was promptly removed, but not before the false information was re-tweeted by some of the account's 11,000+ followers, CBS San Francisco reported.

It is not clear what prompted the tweet, and Apple Inc. representatives have not responded to inquires.

What's trending later tweeted: Apologies -- reports of Steve Job's death completely unconfirmed. Live on.

Jobs announced the resignation of his CEO position at an Apple Inc. board meeting in August. Chief operating officer Tim Cook is replacing him.
