KEY POINTS

  • Tiamat is weak against slashing damage and resistant against Wind
  • Attacking the neck can deal multiple hits per swing
  • Players must reduce her Break Gauge to win in the second phase

Tiamat is the first of the four fiends that players need to beat in “Stranger of Paradise.” This hydra-like boss monster is unlike everything players would have encountered at that point of the game, and it can pose a serious challenge for those who don’t use the Break mechanic.

While players can technically beat Tiamat using any job they have available, using those that have access to fast slashing weapons will be the most effective. As such, having Jed and Neon as the main companions for this fight is much better than having Ash on the field considering his main damage type.

The first phase of the Tiamat boss fight is fairly standard. She will attack with quick jabs with her many heads or use her tail against anyone standing behind her. Occasionally, she will use Wind or Poison magic to attack players from a distance. Whittle her HP down until she breaks.

The second phase gets much trickier. Tiamat will gain access to new attacks, and she will be much more ferocious. What’s worse is that she will always regenerate her HP back to full, which means the only way to beat her is by breaking her stance gauge.

Players must use their Combo Abilities in order to reduce Tiamat’s maximum break gauge. Try to use quick abilities so as not to give her any openings to retaliate. The Samurai job in particular is very good in this fight because of its innate skill that aids with the MP regeneration. The Jinpu skill is also very effective against Tiamat because of its slashing damage and quick cast time.

One of the biggest windows of opportunity here is when Tiamat uses the Breath and Tri-Disaster attacks.

Breath is guaranteed to miss if players are standing directly next to Tiamat while she’s casting it, and Tri-Disaster has a long animation that leaves the boss defenseless. Use these openings to deal as much damage to Tiamat’s break gauge.

Tiamat’s boss fight is more of a test of patience than skill. Dodge or block her telegraphed attacks and retaliate with one or two quick bursts of damage until the boss is defeated.
