The Super Bowl 2018 point spread has been slowly decreasing for the last two weeks, even moving before the NFC Championship Game was officially over. The Philadelphia Eagles were as high as 6.5-point underdogs when it became clear that they’d be meeting the New England Patriots in Minneapolis Sunday afternoon, and the betting public has been on their side.

All of the action on Philadelphia has forced most sportsbooks to move the betting line to 4.5 points, according to OddsShark. Some Las Vegas oddsmakers even have the Patriots as four-point favorites with the big game just two days away.

Despite tying the Patriots for the NFL’s best record, the Eagles have been the underdog in all three of their playoff games. Philadelphia defeated the Atlanta Falcons 15-10 as a home underdog in the divisional round, and they blew out the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 in the conference title game.

The Patriots have been favored in every game this season. They covered a double-digit point spread in the divisional round by defeating the Tennessee Titans 35-14. New England needed a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20 in the AFC Championship Game.

Sunday will mark New England’s eighth trip to the Super Bowl in the Brady-Belichick era. The team was one of the biggest underdogs in the game’s history during their first appearance, getting 14 points when they upset the St. Louis Rams in 2002. The Patriots have been favored in all but one Super Bowl since.

New England was a three-point favorite over Atlanta a year ago, and they were one-point underdogs when they beat the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. The Patriots were seven-point favorites when they beat the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX 13 years ago.

Philadelphia was a three-point favorite when they made their first trip to the Super Bowl in 1981. The Eagles lost to the Oakland Raiders 27-10, and they are still looking for their first Super Bowl victory.

When the Patriots beat the Falcons in overtime last year, they became the first Super Bowl favorite to cover the spread since 2011 when the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. Only two favorites have covered the spread since 2007.
