As Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Maggie (Floriana Lima) try to figure out the safest way to save Alex (Chyler Leigh) from being kidnapped in Season 2, episode 19 of “Supergirl,” the abducted DEO agent won’t just be waiting around to be rescued.

In a recent interview with TVLine, Leigh revealed that Alex isn’t a docile captive, noting that her character will actually make some moves in an attempt to save her own life. In one instance, as reported by the website, Alex uses a credit card to perform some sort of surgery. “It’s pretty badass, I’m not going to lie,” Leigh said of her character’s ingenuity.

In the trailer for the episode, Alex is locked up in a glass cell, which the kidnapper starts filling with water. While it’s unclear how Alex will ultimately survive the deadly situation, TVLine revealed that Kara’s sister performs a Navy SEAL trick in an attempt to get out of it.

“When we decided to do an episode about Alex getting kidnapped, we knew that Alex Danvers is nobody’s victim,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly. “Even though she’s trapped, Alex does two very impressive things to try and escape and help ensure her survival, so that’s really cool.”

J’onn (David Harewood) and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) are also part of the mission to save Alex. According to TVLine, J’onn uses his powers to shapeshift to find the location of Alex’s kidnapper. Winn, meanwhile, “is in full nerd-out, hacking-and-scanning records, finding-the-bad-guy kind of mode,” Jordan told the website. “He’s doing his Tech Guy on Crack kind of thing.”

Although it seems that the episode is an action-packed hour, Kreisberg said that the installment is actually more of a character piece. “It’s a really interesting episode for us,” Kreisberg told Entertainment Weekly of the episode. “We wanted to do something a little different, we wanted to do more of a character piece and put Kara in an emotional and moral dilemma rather than putting her up against something physical. She even says in the episode: ‘She can’t punch her way out of this.’”

“It’s one of my favorite episodes we’ve ever done,” Kreisberg added. “It’s certainly not the flashiest episode in terms of visual effects and in terms of stunts, but just as a character piece, I think it’s so interesting.”

And even though Alex and Maggie are separated for the most part in the episode, Lima revealed that the installment is going to end very well for the couple. “There are a lot of ups and downs, a lot of close calls,” Lima said of what viewers can expect from the episode.

But as a reward for sticking through it all, “a pivotal moment” awaits Alex and Maggie at the end of the episode. Is this “pivotal moment” one of the things that will take Alex and Maggie’s relationship to the “next level,” as Leigh previously teased in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last March? Only time will tell.

“Supergirl” Season 2, episode 19, titled “Alex,” airs on Monday, May 1 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
