Although things seem to be finally falling into place for Daphne and Bay, the ladies deal with new problems on “Switched at Birth” Season 5, episode 8.

On the Tuesday night episode, “Left in Charge,” Bay (Vanessa Marano) is thrilled about having a fun weekend, but Daphne (Katie Leclerc) reveals that she is thinking about Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch). Ally (Tristin Mays) suggests the girls go out and get Daphne a guy that will help her get over him. However, before the ladies can confirm their plans the lights in their apartment shut off.

Fast forward to the following day of the Freeform series, Bay goes to John (D.W. Moffett), hoping he will give her the money to pay the electric bill, but he tells her she needs to find another way to support her lifestyle.

Later on, Daphne complains to Bay that she can’t get over Mingo, but Chris (Sam Adegoke) approaches the two and asks her out. Although Bay warns Daphne that Chris is a player, she insists that she will just use him to help her move on.

While giving Ally a touch up on her tattoo, Bay expresses her worries about not being able to pay the light bill. Ally then suggests they throw a “Lights on Party” to cover the bills.

Over at the Cracked Mug, Bay is picking up a shift as Ally helps her look for potential people to invite to the party when Simone (Maiara Walsh), Bay’s high school nemesis shows up looking fabulous and bragging about her successful career. Bay lies to Simone saying that the party is an art installation and Simone invites herself to the bash.

On their date, Chris and Daphne connect over their rough upbringing and love of sports. The date is going great until Chris’ nose begins to bleed.

Still at the Cracked Mug, Simone runs into Toby (Lucas Grabeel) where she meets his baby Carlton (Elliot Steadman) who has down syndrome. When Simone first sees Carlton she looks shocked and apologizes to Toby for his son’s condition which offends him.

At the clinic, Chris is cleared to go, but while changing his shirt Daphne sees several bruises on his arm which he brushes off as nothing to worry about. Speaking about what she saw to one of the doctors it is revealed that it is more than likely that Chris is using steroids.

Over at the Kennish home, Regina (Constance Marie), Luca (Michael Galante), Kathryn (Lea Thompson) and John have a couples’ game night. While there Luca receives a text from his and Regina’s TA, Lauren (Ashley Gallegos) who gave Regina a bad grade on her paper. After receiving the text asking him to “swing by later” Luca leaves game night.

At the “Lights on Party,” Chris and Daphne share a kiss, but Daphne pulls away and asks Chris if he is using steroids. Although he denies it, Daphne tells him to stop before it is too late, but he gets upset and leaves.

While at the party Toby overhears two guys making fun of people with disabilities and confronts them. The two continue to hurl insults until Travis (Ryan Lane) punches one of them in the face. Toby tells Bay about what happened when Carlton met Simone. However, Bay tells him not to stress over people who don’t know how to say the right thing.

Back at the party, Daphne tells Travis that she heard a rumor that members of the baseball team are doing steroids. Travis reveals that if caught, a college athlete can end their whole career, their team could be suspended and John could lose his job.

After looking online with Kathryn, Regina concludes that Luca dated Lauren. The two then drive to her apartment complex and sit outside of her house trying to find Luca. While there, Regina admits she is worried that Luca will want a family one day and she won’t be able to give it to him. Realizing it was a mistake to come to Lauren’s home, the women decide to leave, but Lauren spots them before they can drive off.

Bay lets party guests into the Cracked Mug after Simone says that she was never the fun one when they were in high school. While there, Ally announces she will be moving out and the group continues drinking until one of the guests breaks several of Regina’s mugs. Upset and disappointed with Bay’s action’s, Regina tells her she will be paying for the damages her party guests caused.

Bay admits to Simone that her life is a mess and the party was a fundraiser to help her pay bills. Simone then admits that her life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, she reveals she almost started drinking again after being sober for four years.

Daphne then arrives at the Kennish home, informing Kathryn that she believes someone on the baseball team is doing steroids.

Luca confronts Regina about driving by Lauren’s house, and she admits that she is worried he will want a family but he tells her all he wants is her.

At the park the following day, Simone apologizes to Toby for her reaction to Carlton and the two begin to talk.

On campus, Chris admits to Daphne that he used the steroids after his shoulder was injured following a scuffle with police officers. He then reveals that his life is over and his chance at the pros are out the door because Kathryn ordered a mandatory drug test for the entire team.

Elsewhere, Bay sells her car to pay her bills and reveals that she feels like her childhood is officially over.
