Teary-Eyed Charlie Puth Talks About 'Worst Breakup;' Announces New Single [Watch]

Charlie Puth broke into tears as he opened up about coping with the "worst breakup" that he experienced in 2019. The 30-year-old singer also announced his upcoming single, "That’s Hilarious."

"I’m really excited for the song to come out, but every time I hear it, I’m kind of brought back to a time that was really, really, really challenging in my life," Puth said in the video shared on TikTok.

"It just rears its ugly head every time — sorry — every time that I hear it," he said while wiping his tears.

A Twitter user shared the same video on Twitter Thursday.

The singer went on to explain why 2019 was his life's "worst year." Although he didn't mention his ex-girlfriend, singer Charlotte Lawrence's name in the video, the ex-couple parted ways in 2019.

"I never told people what happened to me and the pain that I went through going through the worst breakup of my life in 2019," he said. "I just wanted to throw it under the carpet and just start over and surround myself with better people."

Puth shared that he is really "excited" for his fans to listen to this upcoming track that is releasing next month. "This is the hardest song that I ever had to put together, and I’m so excited for you to hear it, OK? So, thank you," he added.

Puth and Lawrence made their relationship Instagram official on Valentine’s Day in 2019 and then broke up in September, the same year.

At that time, Puth wrote on Twitter, "Only because I want ppl to stop asking the question... Yes, I am single now...and please don't believe everything you read...thank you."

On the work front, one month after his break up, the singer dropped a music video, "Cheating on You," which was helmed by director Tyler Yee. Puth also released a music video, titled "Girlfriend" in July 2020. His latest music video, "Light Switch," was dropped in January.

On the personal front, Puth confirmed that he briefly dated Selena Gomez in 2016. In the same year, he also dated actress Bella Thorne. Later, he went on to date actresses Danielle Campbell and Halston Sage for a short period of time before meeting Lawrence.
