A 19-year-old youth was taken into custody after he stabbed a 14-year-old girl to death in order to prevent her from marrying anybody else.

The slain girl, identified as Anshu Kumari, a grade 10 student, was allegedly in a relationship with the accused, Sandeep Kumar, but their families were against it.

"Sandeep had asked Anshu to elope, but she had refused to do so. He finally decided to murder her so that she could not marry anyone else either," a police officer said, local daily the Times of India reported.

On Thursday, the accused came to the victim’s home in the Indian state of Bihar when her parents were away and stabbed her multiple times in the neck with a knife before fleeing the home.

The accused was taken into custody from his home the following day. Police found his bloodied clothes at his home and also recovered the knife used in the murder from a railway track. They also found several photos of the victim on Sandeep’s phone, Times Now News reported.

During interrogation, he confessed to killing the girl. Sandeep said he had a phone conversation with the girl Wednesday and knew she would be alone at home Thursday.

Police said the murder was planned as the youth had purchased the knife one and a half months before the crime.

"He had purchased the knife one and a half months back indicating that he was prepared for the murder. The knife is generally used by students for project work," a police officer told The Times of India.

The accused also told the officers that he used to tell the victim that he would kill her but she never took it seriously.

"Even on Thursday, Sandeep said he had come to kill her when she asked the reason for his sudden visit," the officer added.

The accused remained in jail as of Sunday and the charges levied against him were not known.

Last month, a man in India was arrested for allegedly slitting a woman's throat after she turned down his marriage proposal. The accused then tried to kill himself. He was charged with an attempt to murder and suicide.
