A 17-year-old boy in the Indian state of Karnataka allegedly had one of his arms amputated after it was injected with a poisonous solution by his volleyball coach at a birthday party.

The unnamed boy, who was an out-of-school youth, had attended the coach's party in the Chamarajpet area in Bengaluru on May 31, newspaper The Indian Express reported, citing a police complaint from the boy's mother.

The host, who was identified by The New Indian Express as 21-year-old Manoj, allegedly dissolved unidentified tablets in water and injected the solution into the teen's forearm, according to the complaint filed last week.

"He went to [the coach's] house in Chamarajpet around 9 p.m. and returned at 11 p.m. About four days later, his right elbow was swollen," the mother's police complaint said as per The Times of India.

The swelling prompted the mother to take her son to Bengaluru's Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. There, she claimed, doctors informed them that there was a poisonous substance in her son's elbow. Additionally, doctors told the boy and his mother that the arm had to be amputated.

When asked how the arm got into its state, the son told doctors that the coach "powdered some tablets, dissolved them in water and injected the same into his right arm," according to the complaint.

Chamarajpet police said that they have sought a body warrant for Manoj, who is currently in the Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara due to his alleged involvement in a bike theft case.

"We have verified medical reports and further action will be taken against the accused," an unidentified police officer was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express. Police said they plan to interrogate Manoj Friday regarding the incident.

A first information report has been registered under Section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison with intent to commit offence) of the Indian Penal Code.
