  • The simulation hypothesis was introduced in 2003
  • Among its high-profile proponents is Tesla CEO Elon Musk
  • CZ says that believing that life is a simulation takes  away the pressure

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, is the latest personality to embrace the idea that "we live in a simulation," but he is not alone, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the same four years ago.

Philosopher Nick Bostrom said in the Philosophical Quarterly in April 2003 that our universe and everything in it could be a simulation. While public speculation and debates about the nature of reality since then and many personalities are divided in their stance on this idea.

Interestingly, Binance CEO CZ appeared to support this idea about the universe and us. In a blog titled "I Believe We Live in a Simulation" and published Monday, CZ said, "Mathematically, there is a 0% chance we are not in a simulation."

And while he believes that we are living in a simulation, he admitted that he does not "know what type of simulation we are in." The CEO offered a few possibilities on the kind of simulation we are in, including "a simulation where we are stimulating ourselves," "an individual simulation where everything is simulated for you," and "a group simulation where we are in a group dream like in the movie Inception," or "a simulation simulated by a higher dimension being."

However, CZ noted that not knowing the kind of simulation we are in makes it all the more exciting and takes a lot of pressure off our shoulders. He added, "Whenever you face a new challenge, know it’s just part of the simulation. And you just need to make the best out of it."

It is worth noting that Musk is among the high-profile proponents of the simulation hypothesis. "If you assume any rate of improvement at all, games will eventually be indistinguishable from reality," Musk said before noting that, "We’re most likely in a simulation."

In 2021, Musk doubled down on his belief about life when he cited the 10970's video game "Pong" to affirm his earlier claim that our view of reality is a hyper-realistic computer simulation.

The simulation hypothesis, which Bostrom introduced, claims that "If there are long-lived technological civilizations in the universe, and if they run computer simulations, there must be a huge number of simulated realities complete with artificial-intelligence inhabitants who may have no idea they’re living inside a game — inhabitants like us, perhaps."
