Scholastic has officially announced the return of the much-beloved “Hunger Games” series, and a new film seems like it won’t be far behind.

In a press release, Scholastic confirmed that Suzanne Collins would be returning to write a prequel novel to her original blockbuster trilogy, currently known as “Untitled Panem Novel.” Hitting shelves worldwide on May 19, 2020, the novel will be set 64 years prior to the events of “The Hunger Games,” picking up on the morning of the reaping for the 10th annual Hunger Games.

“With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival,” Collins said of her intentions for the new book. “The reconstruction period ten years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days—as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet—provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

Of course, with news of a new book comes the inevitable speculation of a new film. Luckily, for hungry fans, Lionsgate is already making plans for an adaptation of the forthcoming book. As reported by Deadline, Joe Drake, Chairman of Lionsgate’s film division, confirmed that they have been in contact with Collins about a film adaptation during the development of the new book.

“As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne’s next book to be published,” Drake said in a statement. “We’ve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie.”

Lionsgate released four movies based on Collins’ original trilogy of books between 2012 and 2015. Featuring Jennifer Lawrence as the lead, Katniss Everdeen, the films made nearly $3 billion worldwide and earned critical acclaim, for the most part.

Scholastic will release “Untitled Panem Novel” by Suzanne Collins worldwide on May 19, 2020.
