The toddler was with his mother when the accident took place. She was coming down the stairs carrying 3 bags with her, NY Post reported, quoting eyewitnesses who were at the scene. The boy was in front of her and that was when he saw the train coming from Flatbush. He tried to go past the train but the train was a little faster than what he had expected and got struck by it.

About 20 MTA workers immediately came to the scene and pushed the car back in order to pull the boy out. Authorities also used airbags to lift the train, CBS 2 reported. He was then rushed to the New York Downtown Hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.

The name of the boy was not immediately revealed by the police.

Train services were snared on lines 1,2, and 3 after the incident causing inconvenience to the passengers during peak hours. Police are treating the incident as an accident and investigating the scene.

New York City Transit President Andy Byford issued a statement on behalf of the NYCT subway saying, “Our hearts break for the family and the MTA [Metropolitan Transportation Authority] is praying for them. Our thoughts are with the crew of the train, as well.”
