The drama surrounding the newly divorced Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes might only be getting started with the news. New reports suggest that Cruise, who has been lampooned and criticized for his belief in Scientology, has been heartsick enough to consider giving up his religion in order to win back Holmes and to have more access to daughter Suri, who the couple shares custody of.

Rumors of Holmes’ dissatisfaction with the Church of Scientology have been lobbed since the couple first starting seeing each other. The fervor only increased when they were wed on November 18, 2006 in Italy in a Scientologist ceremony. Now, Cruise could be recognizing some of the discomfort Holmes has had and be willing to change.

“It was a terrifying and rude awakening for Tom when Katie served him with divorce papers. He’s used to feeling undefeatable and untouchable but when he lost Katie he felt like a failure,” an unnamed source told the (U.K.)Mirror, a celebrity site based in the United Kingdom.

Cruise has also reportedly been distancing himself from longtime friend David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology.

“Tom and David have been attached at the hip but this relationship has deteriorated and that, along with the loss of Katie and Suri, is forcing him to question his role in the church,” the source said. “He hasn’t lost faith completely but he is blaming Scientology for what has happened.”

Since news of the divorce broke Cruise has been filming his new movie “Oblivion” in Europe. Holmes has been spotted all over New York City with daughter Suri, something People reported Cruise is having trouble with.

“Tom talks to Suri several times a day. He misses Suri very much,” another unnamed source told People. “[Tom and Suri] are very, very close. He’s up on everything that’s going on in her life.”

Cruise converted to Scientology in 1990 after being introduced to the religion by first wife actress Mimi Rodgers. When that relationship dissolved he married Nicole Kidman and when the couple divorced years later that too was blamed on Scientology.

“He has lost Nicole and now his wife and daughter,” Mirror quoted their source as saying. “He has always used the Scientology techniques but he has now realized they don’t work in marriage.”

Holmes, for her part, might consider getting back together with her jilted ex-lover.

“If Tom truly leaves [the church], Katie would reconsider. She was in love with Tom, he was her childhood crush, and it took a lot of strength to break free. But now she has peace of mind but no love.”
